Faculty/Staff and Workplace Culture
Faculty/Staff Workplace
Culture - Programs and activities that further a culture of excellence, pride,
engagement, and recognition by promoting and recognizing the values of mutual
respect, collaboration, and community. The Center has initiated a number of
activities and programs aimed at helping to make our campuses friendlier and
more welcoming, cordial, and cohesive places in which to learn and work. These
include an enhanced faculty/staff welcome program, the Retired Faculty Association,
the university faculty recognition program, and a employee orientation
program. For further information, contact us at center@odl.rutgers.edu
Organizational Climate Assessment
To assist academic and
administrative units in understanding their organizational climate, the Center
developed the Organizational Climate Assessment (OCA). The inventory provides
information on expectations and satisfaction levels of academic, administrative,
and support staff, and can serve as a very helpful component in organizational
assessment and improvement efforts. The Center provides materials, and assistance
in the planning and use of the inventory. Through the Organizational Research
Services Program, ODL provides pre- and post-survey facilitation for the department,
as well as guidance to leaders on how best to present, and act on survey results.

The Organizational Climate Assessment (Faculty and Administrative versions) promotes an understanding of climate as part of ongoing organizational improvement efforts. The instruments can be ordered through NACUBO.
Welcome,
Orientation, and Recognition Programs
Welcome and Orientation - Securing a place among top institutions
requires the commitment of a competent, knowledgeable, appropriately trained,
and motivated workforce, and an organizational culture that demands, recognizes,
and rewards excellence. The Center assists the university community in realizing
these goals through its core programs and through customized consultation
and facilitation.
Recognition Programs - The Center provides assistance to academic and administrative departments
in the creation of non-financial approaches to encourage and recognize individual,
team, group, and departmental excellence. Programs in this area focus on contributions
to specific unit or university goals, and to broader institutional values
of excellence, mutual respect, collaboration, and community.
Retired
Faculty Association
The Retired Faculty Association
(RFA) of Rutgers University comprises more than 200 members. The mission of
the Association is to promote the continued campus and community involvement
of retired faculty at Rutgers, recognizing that such involvement is highly
beneficial both to the university and to the individual faculty members. A
primary goal of the association is to facilitate continuing contributions
by retirees to the scholarly and professional objectives of the university.
The Center played the lead role in the establishment of the Retired Faculty
Association (RFA), and continues to provide financial and administrative support
for its activities and its director, Todd Hunt, Professor Emeritus of communication.

Organizational Communication
While most organizations realize
the important role communication plays in the flow of information and ideas,
and in "telling their story," only a few know where to begin to ensure that
all those things occur regularly and seamlessly. Through the use of
Center-developed communication inventories and audits, ODL assists departments
in documenting existing communication efforts, identifying gaps, and
developing integrated organizational communication plans. Emphasis is on
information sharing between and across units, and with key
stakeholders.
Our Leadership Style Inventory CD and Communication Style Inventory CD are both designed to assess leadership and communication styles as a means to gaining insight into these two critical dimensions of organizational effectiveness.
